  • Description

Khangas are printed cotton fabrics that are common in East and Central Africa. Although occasionally confused with the "Ankara" or print wax that is common throughout West Africa, there is a marked difference in their origin, design and production. While the Ankara's international connection is Indonesia via Holland, the history of Khangas is tied to the presence of Arab traders in the area. Khangas also differ in their design layout. While Ankara designs usually consist of elements that are repeated throughout the fabric to create a pattern, the layout of a Khanga is strictly divided into three parts: the border (pindo), the center(mji) and the message or name (jina) which is usually a proverb. Also due to the difference in production, the "cracked wax" effect which is usually associated with Ankara is not present in Khangas.
